Ms. Jade recently had a conversation with SUAVV.COM about the state of female rap and the battle between skills and sex appeal in female rap. Ms. Jade seems to be a firm believer that the looks attract the attention and then the skills keep them, I tend to agree. I mean, you can look good all you want but unless you have something special along with it…people won’t stick around too long. Read the full interview below:

In your career, have you ever felt the pressure to release more suggestive material?

“I definitely have felt (and kind of feel it every day) the pressure to release more suggestive material. I think it can be done, it just has to be honest and presented in a non-trashy way. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a little raunchy, or “ratchet”, or whatever, it’s just figuring out a clever way to do it, so that later on down the line, I, my kids ,or family for that matter won’t be embarrassed. That’s just my personal take on it. You have to do what works for you”

In your opinion, for a female emcee, is it about looks or skills?

“Well, to be honest, even though it shouldn’t be like this, it’s the world we live in, looks get the attention, skill keeps the attention”

You mention M.C. Lyte is your idol what about her style made you her fan?

“MC.Lyte is definitely my all-time favorite along with Queen Latifah. It was her voice. It commanded my attention and then the things that she said made me happy to be a girl. I would listen to her every day and it ignited a fire in me. I was just this little girl from Nicetown, fresh off the step, no squad, no crew, no hype,0 just me and my little skill.”

Last, what do you think the future holds for the female emcee? Meaning do you think it (rating) will ever return to just skills?

“I think the future looks great, honestly. We will always have those barriers to break. I think that it’s more of the listener’s responsibility to demand that skill, if that’s what you listen for. If you want to listen to abc, 123 you can listen to that too. It has to be more of a variety because sometimes you don’t want to be on no deep shit. Sometimes you want to just party, sometimes you want to be moved and feel like the artist feels ya pain. It’s all about options so the more females out here that stay in their “own lane”, the more choices the audience and fans will have…I think anyway”
